Milbank, Mayer Brown JSM and Latham & Watkins have all announced new partners as part of their year-end promotion drives, and a number of these promotions have occurred across Asia-Pacific.
Of the five lawyers admitted to Milbank’s partnership, only one is based in Asia: global project finance lawyer Mark Plenderleith got the nod in Tokyo. Plenderleith, whose practice focuses on energy, mining and infrastructure, has advised on some of the firm’s most significant deals in the region, including Sumitomo’s coal-fired Tanjung Jati B expansion project, a deal which was a finalist for the ‘Project Finance Deal of the Year’ award at the ALB South-East Asia Law Awards 2009.
Mayer Brown JSM promoted 14 lawyers to partnership across the globe but its sole Asia-based promotion was Hong Kong-based Alan Yip. Yip, a lawyer in the firm’s real estate practice, specialises in Hong Kong and PRC real estate matters. His practice includes town planning and building law advice and property-related litigations as well as property joint ventures and property redevelopment projects.
Meanwhile, Latham & Watkins saw 23 associates become partners, in addition to raising 13 others to of-counsel. The firm’s only partner promotion in Asia was in Tokyo, where dual-qualified (New York and Japan) Hiroki Kobayashi, a general corporate and M&A lawyer, was elected to partnership. Project finance lawyer David Bills in Singapore and general corporate lawyer Karen Yam in Shanghai were both promoted to of counsel.
