Deacons, Minter Ellison and Makarim & Taira S are mourning the loss of former colleague Garth McEvoy, one of the casualties of the Jakarta hotel bombings on 17 July.
McEvoy was among the nine victims confirmed dead in the attacks at the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in Jakarta last Friday. The 54-year-old was attending a breakfast meeting at the Marriot as a commercial manager at construction firm Thiess, a position he had held for only six months.
Prior to Thiess, McEvoy worked in Minter Ellison's corporate and commercial group based in Brisbane, and was seconded to its Indonesian associate firm Makarim & Taira S as a special counsel last year. Colleagues at Makarim said they were shocked and saddened by the news. “He was professionally respected and a good colleague and we enjoyed working with him during his short secondment in our firm. He had a keen interest in Indonesia especially to its people and culture. His great sense of humour will surely be missed,” said a representative from the firm.
Minter Ellison issued a similar statement on the news: "We were distressed to hear of last Friday's tragic events in Jakarta and our condolences go out to Garth's family and friends at this very sad time."
McEvoy also held positions at Deacons, Mallesons Stephen Jaques, Clayton Utz and the Australian Government Solicitor. Deacons Chief Don Boyd said McEvoy will be deeply missed by his former colleagues. "This is a sad time. Our thoughts are with all of those affected by this tragic event, especially Garth's family and friends. He was a popular mentor and well liked by those he worked with. He will be deeply missed," Boyd said.
