Piper Alderman is hoping to open an office in Perth by the end of the year, managing partner Tony Phelps has revealed. The move has been driven by a desire to better serve the firm’s existing clients in the resources industry. “We’re following client demand, which is what has always been the trigger – that was the case when we opened in Sydney,” said Phelps. Originally an Adelaide firm, Piper Alderman first expanded to the eastern seaboard in 1998 and now has offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.
Phelps said that no decision had been made on the exact format of the new Perth office and that a merger with a “small, high quality” firm was not out of the question.
A number of other national and international firms have also eyed Perth as a growing market with plenty of potential. Plaintiff litigation firm Maurice Blackburn opened an office in Perth late last month, following the appointment of former Slater & Gordon practice group leader Phil Gleeson. Insurance specialist Moray & Agnew also announced plans to open a Perth office last month, following the appointment of former Sparke Helmore partner Phil Keays. Meanwhile Magic Circle firm Clifford Chance will open its doors officially in Perth on 1 May, following a merger with local boutique firm Cochrane Lishman Carson Luscombe (CLCL).
